Mount Primary School, Wirral
The problem: Sports halls are one of the hardest spaces in a school to get right acoustically. High ceilings, hard floors and concrete walls are built to handle daily wear, but they’re also highly reflective. Sound has nowhere to go, so it keeps bouncing around the space. Mount Primary School needed a solution that would bring reverberation under control, stand up to the demands of an active space and suit the hall’s many uses.
Our solution
After an acoustic survey, we specified and installed a combination of Silent Space ceiling rafts and wall panels to restore acoustic comfort in the hall. Chosen for:
Class A absorption: the hall’s hard finishes meant the highest level of absorption was needed to bring reverberation time down.
Impact resistant: the panels can take knocks from balls and equipment, so they stand up to daily use in a sports hall.
Cost-effective: a practical, budget-friendly option for schools.
Balanced coverage: treating both the ceiling and walls cuts down echo and significantly reduces the sound reflected into the space.
The Outcome
The acoustic treatment has significantly reduced echo and background noise, giving pupils and teachers a clearer, calmer space.
The quieter environment eases sensory overload for pupils, helping them stay focused during lessons. With a balanced acoustic environment, the hall works just as well for assemblies, performances and whole-school events as it does for PE.
