The Avalon Project, London
The problem: The technical workshop at Avalon was struggling with significant echo and reverb. With two class tutors and ten students working simultaneously, the room quickly became overwhelmingly loud, and when power tools were added into the mix, it was almost unworkable.
Our solution
The Ecophon Solo Rectangle was specified to address reverberation and reduce noise to a workable level.
These freehanging, ceiling-mounted acoustic panels are engineered to absorb sound from both sides, making them well-suited to a high-activity, hard-surfaced environment like a technical workshop. Installed above the primary working areas, the panels intercept sound energy before it builds into sustained reverberation.
This approach ensured:
- Reverberation times reduced significantly across the working area
- Tutors are able to give instruction at a normal voice level, even with tools running
- Students are better able to concentrate and follow safety-critical guidance
- Reduced fatigue for both staff and students across the teaching day
The Outcome
The result is a workshop that functions as it should.
The teaching team can communicate clearly, students can follow instructions without straining to hear, and the space remains fully practical for hands-on technical work. A targeted ceiling treatment has made a difference to a room that was previously unworkable.
