Heart of the Campus, London Metropolitan University

The problem: London Metropolitan University's Holloway Road campus was long overdue for an update. The old ground floor no longer reflected the energy of the university's community. London Met stripped the space back and opened up the first floor to give the space real presence, a soaring, light-filled space built to handle the full flow of students at peak times. But double-height ceilings come with an acoustic trade-off. Without treatment, hard surfaces and high ceilings let sound build up and bounce around unchecked. A space designed to serve up to 100 students at a time risked becoming a space nobody wanted to sit in for long.

Our solution

Resonics supplied and installed Autex Beam acoustic panels, along the exposed beam arches within the double-height ceiling void. Rather than treating the acoustics as an afterthought, the panels were integrated into the space’s architecture so the treatment reads as a considered design feature.

This approach let the design team keep the drama of the double-height volume, the openness, the light, while quietly controlling reverberation exactly where it builds up most: overhead, across the exposed structure.

Resonics worked closely with the wider project team to fit the panels around the exposed beams and existing services, keeping the install to the architect’s design intent. That coordination meant the acoustic treatment could go in without disrupting the build schedule.

The Outcome

The finished space delivers on both fronts: a striking, new arrival point for the campus, and a social hub that’s comfortable to spend time in.

With the panels in place, excess noise is absorbed before it has the chance to build up and bounce around the double-height space. Conversations stay easy at a normal volume, even when the lobby is busy, so students can comfortably sit, work or catch up with friends without raising their voices over the crowd.
