Bluebird Cafe, West Sussex

The problem: Like many cafes, Bluebird Cafe faced a familiar acoustic challenge. Hard, reflective surfaces throughout the space meant sound bounced rather than absorbed. Wooden floors, an open-plan layout and the constant hum of espresso machines and grinders combined to create a build-up of noise that quickly grew at busy times.

Our solution

Following an acoustic survey, Resonics specified and installed Silent Space acoustic rafts across two key zones: directly above the till and barista area, and above the main seating area.

Positioning rafts above the till tackled noise at its source, targeting the point where queuing, conversation and equipment noise all converged. Rafts above the seating area reduced the general wash of noise across the room, making it easier to follow conversation from table to table.

The rafts were specified with a high NRC rating suited to a commercial food and beverage environment, delivering effective sound absorption alongside a durable, easy-to-clean finish that stands up to daily wear in a busy cafe.

The Outcome

With the ceiling treated above the till and seating areas, noise no longer builds unchecked.

Conversations are easier to hold, staff can hear orders more clearly during service, and the space keeps its lively atmosphere without tipping into overwhelming noise.
