Southsea Library

The problem: Libraries are synonymous with quiet, but that doesn’t mean they are immune to acoustic issues. In fact, in environments where silence is expected, even small sound disturbances can become major distractions. When Southsea Library approached Resonics, their goal was clear: reduce unwanted noise and reverberation within the space without compromising its open-plan layout or visual appeal. The challenge was to design an effective acoustic solution tailored to the library’s unique architectural features and sound-sensitive environment.

Our solution

Resonics installed a carefully planned combination of acoustic rafts, ceiling clouds, and solo panels, targeting the most acoustically reflective areas of the library. Each product was selected for its performance, aesthetic quality, and suitability for open public spaces.

Acoustic Ceiling Rafts: Suspended to absorb sound from above, reducing echo and improving clarity within large, open volumes.

Ecophon Solo Panels: Strategically placed for additional control of sound reflections across exposed ceiling surfaces.

This layered approach ensured even sound distribution, reducing sharp, sudden noises and maintaining the quiet ambience expected in a library setting.

The Outcome

The installation successfully delivered an ideal reverberation time across the library’s open-plan space, significantly improving acoustic comfort for visitors and staff.

Resonics delivered a discreet but highly effective solution, ensuring Southsea Library remains a peaceful and distraction-free environment for reading, studying, and community use.
