Soho Theatre, Walthamstow
The problem: Soho Theatre Walthamstow, a Grade II-listed Art Deco landmark, faced acoustic challenges common to performance venues, including distracting echoes and muffled sound that can affect both performances and the audience experience. With a rich cultural legacy that has hosted legendary artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Johnny Cash, the theatre’s refurbishment presented an opportunity to address these issues. Enhancing acoustic quality was a key priority to ensure the space was fit for purpose, allowing every live performance to deliver maximum impact, clarity and enjoyment.
Our solution
Resonics delivered a sensitive, design-led acoustic solution that respected the building’s historic character while addressing key performance issues.
SilentSpace fabric-wrapped panels were installed across multiple areas, including the auditorium, Ziggurat Bar, control room and community space. These Class A absorption panels significantly improved speech intelligibility and reduced noise levels while integrating seamlessly into the venue’s interior.
The treatments were carefully positioned to reduce reflections, control reverberation, and preserve the theatre’s architectural features, ensuring the visual identity of the space remained intact.
The Outcome
The completed installation has significantly improved the acoustic environment across the theatre:
- Enhanced clarity and definition during performances.
- Reduced echo and reverberation in high-activity areas.
- Greater comfort for audiences, performers and staff.
- A subtle, unobtrusive solution that aligns with the theatre’s historic design.
The result is a more immersive, engaging experience that supports the theatre’s ongoing programme of live performances.
