Ravenbourne University

The problem: Ravensbourne University London is a digital media and design university. Spanning multiple levels, the university features lots of open spaces where there is little physical division and hard concrete floors and walls throughout. Sound travel was a significant issue, with noise from multiple areas spilling over and causing disruptions to those working. Once filled with students, the noise levels would rise gradually and quickly become an uncomfortable and distracting environment.

Our solution

We used a range of products, focusing heavily on acoustic ceiling panels, which are heavy-duty absorbers, excellent at dispersing reverberation in large open areas.

We fitted Ecophon Solo rafts throughout areas of the university, including in classrooms, the atrium, and circulation areas. The building featured large circular windows, for further noise control and to match the existing design elements, Ecophon Solo Circle panels were integrated on the walls.

In addition, we installed large modular hanging acoustic screens to prevent sound travel between the atrium and classrooms. These Aircone screens from Abstracta added a 3-dimensional and multi-coloured design feature that effectively absorbs excess reverberation on both sides of the screen.

A comprehensive Soft dB sound masking system was installed in the campus library to mask environmental sounds and drown out disruptive noises.

The Outcome

The installation of acoustic treatments significantly reduced sound transmission between areas, reducing noise distractions and creating a quieter learning environment.

Resonics’ tailored acoustic solutions ensured that each space within the university contributes to a harmonious, productive, and visually striking learning space.
